Visit of the 3 Trophies

For the millions of Liverpool fans around the world, May 25, 2005 remains one of the most unforgettable days in the history of the legendary English Premier League club.

Memories are still fresh of that famous night in Istanbul when Rafael Benitez’s men defied the odds and hit back from three goals down to beat Milan in a penalty shoot-out and lift their fifth European Cup.

Three months later, Liverpool went on to make it a double of successes in Europe when again they fought back from behind to beat Russia’s CSKA Moscow 3-1 in the UEFA Super Cup final in Monaco.

Liverpool fans in Gozo renewed their memories of those incredible exploits when they get the opportunity to see the two coveted UEFA trophies which were brought over by the Liverpool Supporters Club.

Liverpool FC Museum Curator Stephen Done and his assistant Steve Newton were in our island with the trophies.

Before May, 2005, Anfield had an average of 50,000 to 60,000 visitors a year. But in the last year the numbers doubled and until last month over 120,000 fans had travelled to Merseyside to see the stadium and club’s museum.

Done said that since he started as curator at the Liverpool museum he dreamt that one day he would be in charge of an ‘original’ Champions League trophy.

“Since 1997, I always said that it would have been wonderful for a great club like Liverpool to win a fifth European Cup that would give us an authentic trophy to keep at Anfield forever,” he said.

“Nine years on, and this dream has come to reality. It’s a big achievement not only for the club but also for the millions of Liverpool fans around the world.

“This is a great time for us. We’ve won the FA Cup last week and now we hope that more trophies will be heading to Anfield in future.”

The 30th May 2006, the Champions Cup and Super Cup will be in Gozo and displayed during a reception at the Grand Hotel, Mgarr.
